Red River Street Bridge Rehabilitation

This bridge rehabilitation project includes engineering design and plan development for the rehabilitation of a movable bridge and its approaches.  Huval & Associates is coordinating with sub-consultants on three aspects of the project – traffic control, electrical design, and topographic survey.

The scope of the project is to develop the needed structural, mechanical, electrical, and architectural rehabilitation of the bridge, and to also provide for pedestrian and bicycle upgrades to the bridge.

Huval & Associates began work on the project by conducting a thorough inspection of the bridge which included its approaches, mechanical and electrical systems, and operator’s house.  We then presented our findings and recommendations in report form to the LADOTD.

The engineering and plan development for the project have been broken down as follows:


The structural rehabilitation of the bridge includes repairs to the damage to the abutment caused by pavement growth; repairs to the damaged approach slab and providing a relief mechanism for the future approach slab; and the replacement of the steel grid deck on the movable span.

The team is also designing and detailing a method to upgrade the existing pedestrian walkway along the bridge to meet the current ADA standards for accessible design.  We are also designing a new bicycle path along the current bridge.


The projects requires the rehabilitation of all movable bridge elements including new span locks, new jib hoists, lubrication and painting of all machinery, inspection of the wire ropes, and refurbishing the traffic barriers.

Traffic control

Our project team is coordinating with a sub consultant for the engineering and plan development relating to the traffic control during construction.

Topographic Survey

We are coordinating with a sub consultant for the topographic survey necessary on the Alexandria approach side for the location of the new ADA pedestrian walkway switchbacks and partial relocation of the one way levee road and existing storm drains.


We are coordinating with a sub-consultant for the engineering design and plan development of rehabilitation plans to the movable bridge electrical system.  The project specifications also require a new generator for the movable bridge.

Bridge Operators House:

Plans for the rehabilitation and updating of the operators house include replacing the roof, windows, doors and painting of the structure;  the installation of a bathroom (including all plumbing), a sewage treatment plant, and a new water line; as well as the installation of a new HVAC system.
