LA 114 Over Bayou Desglaises
Location: Avoyelles Parish
Date Completed: 2008
Huval was contracted to prepare plans for an emergency replacement of the LA 114 Over Bayou Desglaises Bridge. This new bridge design was for a 3-span AASHTO Type III Pre-stressed Concrete Girder Bridge.
Additionally the new bridge called for a pedestrian sidewalk to run alongside it. The project was fast-tracked because the original bridge was in such poor condition that the LADOTD was forced to close it to all traffic.
The timber piles (the vertical supports for the bridge) for the original bridge were broken and could no longer safely support the bridge structure. The LADOTD chose to replace the bridge rather than attempt to repair it.
Huval prepared the design plans as well as a topographic study and hydraulics study for this project. This was a particularly challenging project because of the short required time frame due to the bridge closure.
- The greatest challenge involved in the Bayou Desglaises Bridge Replacement project was the time frame
- The Huval staff worked extra hours to meet the short time frame while still maintaining other projects
